Foregate Street Crossing

A new pedestrian crossing has been switched on this week on a busy route through Worcester city centre.

The addition of the new signalised crossing on Foregate Street forms part of Phase 5 of the Worcester Future High Street Fund programme. Previous phases have seen improvements made in Angel Row, Trinity Street, St Swithins Street, The Cross, St Nicholas Street and The Foregate.

Councillor Marc Bayliss, Cabinet Member for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, at Worcestershire County Council said: “This is an important part of the wider project, which is playing a crucial role in improving public spaces and regenerating Worcester city centre. The crossing will benefit pedestrians, particularly people arriving by train, as it will make the crossing from Foregate Street Station much safer and easier. It should encourage more walking, as well as opening-up access to the city centre and beyond.

"The area is going through change and we want to make it as accessible as possible, for everyone to enjoy."

Councillor Marjory Bisset, Joint Leader of Worcester City Council and Vice-Chair of Policy & Resources Committee, said: “The northern part of the city centre is already looking better thanks to the ongoing repaving and regeneration work, funded by the £17.9 million we secured from the Future High Streets Fund. This new crossing will, in due course, help provide easy access from Foregate Street Station to the soon-to-be opened new route to The Arches, and also to the Scala and Corn Exchange buildings, where Worcester’s new arts venue will be created.
“These initiatives, when completed, will bring a boost to Worcester’s economy, supporting our local businesses and our city’s growing reputation as a tourist destination.”

The new crossing replaces the original crossing near the junction with Pierpoint Street. As this displaces the northbound bus-stop on Foregate Street, works to relocate this stop slightly further north with a new shelter, including a real-time information screen, will commence in the next few weeks.

Phase 5 on Foregate Street, which also includes an upgrade to footways and public space with new natural stone paving, is scheduled for completion before the Easter holidays. It will be followed by the final phase of the programme on Angel Street.

The improvements are being delivered by Worcestershire County Council in partnership with Worcester City Council, with work due to finish in summer 2024.

The overall programme is part of the major regeneration of the city centre, funded by £17.9 million from Worcester City Council’s successful bid to the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.
